Elk Lake, Matachewan and the Montreal River

Nestled in Northeastern Ontario, the Elk Lake – Matachewan (Montreal River) area is the place to be for any outdoor enthusiast. It’s the perfect destination to escape to nature; whether you enjoy outdoor recreation or would like to just soak up the natural beauty of Mother Nature, anyone can enjoy themselves with the multitude of activities available. Gorgeous trails, sky-grazing trees, pristine waters set the backdrop for your next adventure.

Outdoor fun can be had all year round! During the warm season, hikers, boaters, anglers and trail riders (on ATVs) can be seen all over. Once winter comes, ice fishing, skiing and snowmobiling are the most popular.

Summer brings out the great fishing. The waters in the area, including the Montreal River, are populated with a variety of species of all sizes. From small panfish to trophy-sized targets, any angler will enjoy him or herself. Popular fish include walleye, lake trout, northern pike and smallmouth bass. With chains of lakes dotted around the area, there’s always opportunity.

Numerous outfitters in the region also provide hunting trips and packages throughout the year. Many hunters come to this area in search of moose and black bear. Small game, like snowshoe hare, ruffed and spruce grouse are also common in the region.

Once the cold begins and the snow starts falling, fishing groups can find an ice hole to try to reel in some trophies during ice-fishing season, or explore the network of trails winding around the area by snowmobile. Trails are groomed routinely and are perfect for exploring the area while getting the adrenaline pumping. With hundreds of miles winding around, there’s no shortage of places to see!

With a host of other activities in the area, every member of the family will find something they love to do. Get closer to nature and see what it has to offer you — get the best in Northeastern Ontario.
